The 28th Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme 2001

5 Killed in highway horror and 11 injured as minibus carrying Youth
Programme National Leaders and officials crashes into car.

Bandar Seri Begawan, Five people were killed, four of them on the spot
in an accident involving a Brunei Government minibus and a Volvo sedan,
at the traffic lights junction where the new Mentiri Highway meets Jalan
Sungai Akar. The bus was carrying a number of delegates who had arrived
in the Sultanate by sea on Saturday for the 28th Southeast Asian Youth
Programme (SSEAYP). Brunei Darussalam was the 3rd port of call for this
year programme after the Philippines. The bus was on its way to the
Indoor Stadium where the officials were expected to attend the "Home
stay Matching Ceremony". Due to the tragedy the ceremony was cancelled.

The deceased are :

1) Ms. Akiko Shinohara (administrative staff and X-PY 96)

2) Mr. Lamdin Hj Ramli (National Leader - Malaysia)

3) Mr. Kamaluddin Said (National Leader - Indonesia)

4) Mr. Tamrin Ibrahim (Officer of the Department of Youth &
Sports Brunei Darussalam/ X-NL SSEAYP 92 / X-PY85 and OBSC
Representative 1997)

5) Mr. Jeraee Yan (Driver)

Eleven others travelling along with the in the ill-fated bus were
injured: among them were Mr Haji Jalil Yussof, a Bruneian Liaison
Officer (X-PY85), and others NLs from other Participating Countries.
The survivors are now in stable condition and are currently undergoing
treatment at RIPAS Hospital.

Tragedy leads to cancellation of Youth Programme in Brunei Darussalam.

An emergency meeting was held at the Hassanal Bolkiah Indoor Stadium
following the tragic accident which occurred yesterday killing 5 peoples
and injuring 11 who are some of the National Leaders of the 28th SSEAYP
2001.

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports
and in the presence of the Minister of Education, Bruneian Government
Senior Officials, ambassadors from the participating countries in the
programme, secretaries for various embassies and Ship administrators.

The Brunei Goverment cancelled the activities which started from that
day onwards, which is supposed to end on September 25 because of this
unexpected tragedy which shocked the whole country as well as those
people coming from other countries.

After the meeting, the officials and those present during the meeting
immediately proceeded to MS Nippon Maru to inform the delegates about
the tragedy fate of their collegues about the tragic fate of their
colleagues and to express their condolences on their teams.
